Researchers from the Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology have published a dissertation titled "Research and Development Dynamics in Functional Materials: A Comparison Case Study of Power Device Technology through Network Analysis" in 29th International Conference on Knowledge-Based and Intelligent Information & Engineering Systems (KES 2025).
Abstract
Power semiconductors play a crucial role in energy conservation by significantly reducing power loss and enabling high-temperature operation and high-speed switching. They are anticipated to be utilized in various applications, including home appliances, industrial equipment, railway systems, and electric vehicles, to achieve a carbon-neutral society by 2050. This study analyzes a functional chemical manufacturer’s R&D and business development activities focusing on semiconductor materials over time. Through collaborative patent network analysis, we examine silicon carbide (SiC) and gallium oxide (Ga₂O₃) power devices. The analysis reveals temporal changes in the R&D network structure, providing valuable insights into the evolution of these networks and their impact on market dynamics. Our findings suggest that identifying key fields and companies can guide the formation of optimal partnerships and effective resource allocation in R&D strategies, addressing business development challenges.
